Managing Marine Ecosystems and Development: the Chesapeake Bay Experience
نویسنده
چکیده
The Chesapeake Bay has been an important test bed for large-scale coastal ecosystem restoration and management. Science has played a key role but faces major new challenges as there is a need to make more reliable predictions of future conditions in the face of continued human development in the region. Reconstruction of a modern environmental history of the bay provides a useful prologue for prediction of the future. However, effective assessments of future conditions require greater integration of environmental research, modeling and monitoring. Furthermore, in order to be an effective guide for sustainable development, such coastal science assessments must be integrated with predictions of societal change, landscape dynamics, and technological improvements.

Managing Marine Ecosystems and Development: Experiences from the Chesapeake Bay and Other Coastal Ecosystems in the United States
In order to maintain the biotic integrity and performance of coastal marine ecosystems affected by human population growth and economic development an ecosystem approach to management is required. This is particularly challenging when, as is the case for many coastal ecosystems, development activities on land, often far removed from the coast, have a major impact on the coastal environment. The...
متن کاملScience and management in four U . S . coastal ecosystems dominated by land - ocean interactions
The influence of science in the recognition of the effects of landscape changes on coastal ecosystems and in the development of effective policy for managing and restoring these ecosystems is examined through four case studies: Chesapeake Bay, San Francisco Bay, the Mississippi Delta, and Florida Bay. These ecosystems have undergone major alterations as a result of changes in the delivery of wa...
متن کاملScientific requirements for ecosystem-based management in the restoration of Chesapeake Bay and Coastal Louisiana
Ecosystem-based management requires integration of multiple system components and uses, identifying and striving for sustainable outcomes, precaution in avoiding deleterious actions, and adaptation based on experience to achieve effective solutions. Efforts underway or in planning to restore and manage two major coastal ecosystems, the Chesapeake Bay (Chesapeake Bay Program) and coastal Louisia...
متن کاملPhylogenetic diversity of Synechococcus in the Chesapeake Bay revealed by Ribulose-1,5- bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (RuBisCO) large subunit gene (rbcL) sequences
In order to understand how Synechococcus in the estuarine environment (Chesapeake Bay) are phylogenetically related to other known marine Synechococcus, partial rbcL gene sequences from 25 strains of Synechococcus spp. isolated from estuarine, coastal and oceanic waters were sequenced. The rbcL gene phylogeny showed that Chesapeake Bay Synechococcus isolates together with other marine Synechoco...
